Canon PowerShot SD790 IS
The Canon PowerShot camera line is a set of cameras that provide professional-style looking images. From our self tests, it could record flames quite well. We have done many tests such as close water shootups, video, flowers & plants, and some tests with images and text on screens. What we found that was the weakest, was the video. This canon is one of the higher end models in the slim line of cameras. We had to let go of $350 to buy this camera.
I always liked the idea of taking pictures of things as it gave me something to do, and look at them 10 years from now saying "Wow, that was 10 years ago! Look at that quality!" For more comparisons with this camera, I had previously used a Kodak EasyShare c813 that I had got for Christmas. I Just happened to get my PowerShot on sale. My PowerShot must take really good video if I can get about 15 minutes out of it, with 45 on the Kodak with a 2GB memory card. Along with the video, the PowerShot takes pictures at 10MP with a 3648 x 2736 resolution! That's big. The Kodak wasn't far behind at 3056 x 2292.
How good is it in different shooting modes? Well, I can start by saying that the close-up text is a BIG advancement over Kodak's. It didn't even have a mode for closeup, and for auto, it turned out blurry (so were videos). Using the auto feature, you can get good shots. But auto doesn't pick up moving objects. Luckly, there's a special function for that! There is many other shooting modes that are perfect for multiple situations!
I have gone over a few above, but I will list some more here. Of course it has a video mode, and with video, that includes a microphone (this could pick up sounds from a few rooms down the hall), and a speaker (we got it to a point of loudness equal to your standard iPod headphones). It include's Canon's Digital EPLPH modes, a 3x zoom, image stabilizer, color swap, digital macro, color accent, stitch assest, ISO 3200, underwater, aquarium, fireworks, beach, snow, foliage, sunset, indoor, Kids & Pets, night snapshots, and portrait. As you can see, there is many great picture functions included with this PowerShot! Definitely enough to be a pro photographer!
These photos have great quality with them, but the pro needs some Photoshop with some pictures. With such a high resolution, this is great to see something in the background, but may be bad if your in court and the bad guy. These pictures are so great, you can literally see dust on your keyboard! I have even taken pictures of random items, and after going through the photos, I see things that I wouldn't normally see! Sometimes the camera is better than your eyes.
If you were making videos, we hope you have a real video camera. But if you do make videos, the .mov files match up great with Adobe After Effects CS5 or Sony Vegas 11. With Camtasia Studio 7.1, we were having problems trying to import video from the SD card. If you were just making a YouTube video, we were able to upload a raw .mov file from the camera, and YouTube picked it up as 720p! So you got good quality right out of the camera!
This is a great camera if you want to start out with Pro photos. It has so many functions, I have used almost every one since I have used this camera. If we were to use it with video, I wouldn't use it if I had a better video recorder, but it definitely gets the job done! This camera is the best slim camera I have used up to this day and time!
Prices & How to Buy
This PowerShot was an expensive camera at the time, but as the years pass, hardware gets cheaper and cheaper. Like a home PC in 2002 was $2,500. Now you can get a pc with 8x ram, 6x hard drive space, 4x video power, and 6x more processing speed for $800. My PowerShot was purchased at Walmart on clearance.
