Minecraft

History:

"I started Minecraft after playing some Infiniminer with a couple of people from TigSource. I realized that a game that simple yet that dynamic had a lot of potential to turn into a really great game, and kept coming up with things I wanted to change and stuff I wanted to add.

I had recently quit my job as a game developer to be able to focus more on indie game dev during my free time, and I was looking for a new game to develop. I had a few ideas floating around, but most required really long development times.

These two factors led to Minecraft."

Review:

Minecraft is a 3D brick building game. It is popular for its ease of use to play, and all the possibilities it opens up for you. Minecraft is cross platform with Java, and that means you can play it on your PC, Mac, or Linux operating system. Just recently, they released an iOS version (for iPhones, iPad, iPod touch), and a Android version. With Minecraft, you could build a home, or even build a city. The possibilities are endless.
There is two game modes, Creative and Survival. Creative lets you have unlimited blocks and you can build something awesome, or Survival, which you have to be scaried of mobs and you have to mine to survive.

Running:
Running it is very easy. Just get the exe file and run it in case of Windows.
In case of Mac, drop it in your /Applications folder and run it.
However, it is a bit harder in Linux. You have to get the jar file and if it doesn't work at first, type in the command prompt:
java -Xmx512M -Xms256M -cp Minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame.

With that done, let's play!

Playing:
Minecraft, isn't a game that you play for 5 minutes and then you leave it. Minecraft encourages you to play for hours, days, weeks and even years. It is enough to addict a person.

There is two ways of playing it, singleplayer and mulitiplayer.

Survival:
You have only 10 minutes to build a base, craft the essentials, and mine.
The game starts by cutting trees to get wood. At first it may feel it is verrryyyy slow to cut, but you can get an axe and speed it up a bit after you craft your first tool.

With your first wood, you can create your first workbench, which allows you to create your first tools, your first house and your first tools.

Yes, it's a dirt house. What about it?
Minecraft also has a night period of 8 minutes. Mobs come out and attack you. That's why you have a house - to defend yourself.
You can skip the period right-clicking on a bed. However, you should expand and mine when it's night.

What a nice house you have! Sssshame if something happened to it.
Minecraft is all about upgrading. Build a house, upgrade your tools, upgrade your house, upgrade your tools, etc. You can also go and fight the mobs (or join the zombies if you die).
Minecraft has 3 dimensions - the world, the nether and the end. During world, everything happens normally. The nether, is a place similar to hell.

In the nether...
And the end is a strange place. A dragon, loads of endermen and end stone.
Creative:
Creative is fun. Build anything and everything. Your blocks are unlimited, and you can build awesome things.

Editor's Verdict:

A great timewaster you can't get away from! 5 stars!

These are not illegal downloads because they require a paid account to use them.

Windows

Download Minecraft.exe (270 KB).

Macintosh

Download Minecraft.zip (270 KB).

Linux

Download minecraft.jar (89 KB).

Server

Windows

Download Minecraft_Server.exe (802 KB). Place it anywhere you want, then run it.

Macintosh & Linux

If you want to run the server on any other OS or without GUI it's a bit more involved (see this wiki article for a tutorial). First make sure you can use java from the command line. On Linux and Mac OS X this should already be set up but on Windows you might have to tinker with the PATH environment variable. Download and run minecraft_server.jar (621 KB) with java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui.
