Windows 8 Dev Preview build 8102
Tl;dr: It's bad.
Windows 8 Dev Preview build 8102 was released on September 13, 2011. There are 3 versions: a 32-bit version, 64-bit version, 64-bit version with Developer tools and Visual Studio 11 beta.
Windows 8 Dev Preview build 8102 is based on the NT6.2 kernel. Windows 8 Dev Preview build 8102 has many enhancements from 7, but also removes some features. Keep in mind since this is a Dev Preview, it is not finished and will have more features Windows 7 had later.

In my tests, Windows 8 Dev Preview build 8102 (which I will now just call Windows 8 Dev) is much faster than Windows 7. It boots up about 10 seconds faster, and is better actually running. I have been able to open more high memory applications with it!
Windows 8 Dev features a new start menu that may start out confusing and stupid, but if you customize it and Microsoft tweaks a little more for the final release, then it is even more stupid for your needs. It is called Metro App (interface).
You can place all your programs in there after they install in the left corner with ease, and use it sometimes easier than the old start menu. The old start menu though- it was removed, which makes getting used to this OS hard, but you can get used to it. I think they should integrate part of the new Metro start menu and old one for ease of access to My Computer, and etc. Also, Aero Basic is now replaced with a more basic metro style theme. It is a newer interface with different Window types and Controlbox buttons.

Believe it or not, about 95% of apps that work with Windows 7 will work with Windows 8 Dev. I should also mention it features the new Internet Explorer 10 Dev Preview. And there is a new task manager, among other things such as native ISO mounting, etc.
The bottom line is, Windows 8 Dev is overall a pretty (and pretty good) Operating System, but is not ready to be used as a main OS. There are still things missing, and of course it is still a Beta. If you want to have fun with an OS and play around to see where this is going, why not install Windows 8 Dev? Windows 8 Dev is free to anyone willing to try it until the next beta is out. It expires in March of 2012. To download Windows 8, click on the link below and the version you want. It will be in ISO format. Windows 8 Dev is a developmental version, but please run it in a virtual machine as it isn't ready to be used as a main OS yet.
